Case Study · SEO/GEO Diagnostic Audit August 26, 2026 6 min read AH Aiden Hoang Nguyen

A solo US immigration law practice came in with a website that already had a healthy footprint: 104,320 impressions and 1,189 clicks over 16 months, with rock-solid brand search (position 1.0–1.4 for the firm's own name). But the money keyword — a "immigration lawyer + [city]" search — was stuck at position 8 with a CTR far below what a page-one ranking should deliver, and the homepage alone was absorbing 87% of all impressions. Here's how I read 16 months of Search Console data to find exactly where the next round of work should go. (Client identity withheld at this stage — the numbers below are real, unedited GSC data.)

The Challenge

16 months of Search Console data (1,189 clicks / 104,320 impressions, 1.14% overall CTR) told two very different stories depending on which keywords you looked at. Branded search — the firm's own name — was performing exactly as it should: position 1.0–1.4, CTR 15–26%. That's a site with a real, recognized local reputation.

Non-brand, commercial-intent search told a weaker story. "immigration lawyer + [city]" — the term most likely to bring in a new client who doesn't already know the firm's name — sat at position 8.07 across 11,644 impressions, but converted only 0.25% of that attention into a click. And a near-duplicate phrasing, "[city] immigration lawyer," ranked at position 31 for the same intent — a sign the site's content isn't consistently optimized across equivalent keyword variants.

The bigger structural pattern: the homepage alone accounts for 87% of the site's total impressions. The dedicated local landing page — whose URL slug matches the exact money keyword — ranks at position 23.14, well outside page one. Several visa-category pages (citizenship, waivers, non-immigrant visas, asylum) show thousands of impressions but only 0–1 click each, the same pattern repeated across the site.

GEO Insight — flagged, not yet confirmed
The broadest head term, "immigration lawyer," shows an average position of 2.95 across 14,325 impressions — a near-top-3 ranking signal — but only 5 clicks (0.03% CTR). A position that strong paired with a CTR that low is the kind of pattern that usually means something in the SERP — a Local Pack, People Also Ask block, paid ads, or an AI Overview — is absorbing the attention before the organic result gets seen. This hasn't been confirmed with a manual SERP screenshot yet; it's next on the list, not a finding I'm claiming as settled.

The Approach

With one Search Console snapshot and no prior audit trail to compare against, the right first move isn't to start rewriting pages — it's to turn 16 months of aggregate data into a ranked list of what's actually worth fixing first. Three questions drove the prioritization:

1. Where is brand strength being wasted?

The firm has genuine local authority — branded search proves it. The homepage capturing 87% of impressions means that authority isn't yet distributed across the pages actually built to rank for commercial-intent, non-brand searches.

2. Which page-one keyword is underperforming its position?

"immigration lawyer + [city]" at position 8 with a 0.25% CTR is the single highest-leverage fix available — it's already on page one, so the work is title/meta and search-intent alignment, not a long climb up the rankings from scratch.

3. Is a strong ranking actually translating into visibility?

The "immigration lawyer" anomaly (position 2.95, CTR 0.03%) can't be diagnosed from the export alone — it needs a manual SERP check to see what's actually occupying the top of that results page before deciding whether it's a GEO problem, a Local Pack problem, or something else.

What the Audit Produced

This phase is a diagnostic, not a completed turnaround — the deliverable is a ranked list of next actions, not a before/after yet:

  1. Read all 16 months of Queries, Pages, Countries, Devices and Search Appearance data to separate genuine patterns from single-month noise.
  2. Confirmed brand health is not the problem — branded search terms both average position 1–2.5, ruling out a reputation or NAP-consistency issue.
  3. Isolated the highest-leverage non-brand fix: "immigration lawyer + [city]" at position 8 / 0.25% CTR — a title and meta rewrite candidate, not a content-from-scratch project.
  4. Flagged the local landing page gap: the dedicated local page ranks 15 spots below where its own target keyword ranks elsewhere on the site — worth investigating whether the homepage is unintentionally competing with it.
  5. Logged one unverified anomaly for manual SERP review ("immigration lawyer," position 2.95 / CTR 0.03%) rather than reporting it as a confirmed AI Overview or Local Pack finding without evidence.
  6. Noted a secondary audience signal: traffic from one Latin American country converts at a 17.75% CTR — small volume, unusually high relevance, worth a closer look if the firm wants to explore community-specific targeting.

Next Milestone

The plan going forward: run the manual SERP check on the "immigration lawyer" anomaly, ship a title/meta pass on the underperforming money keyword and the local landing page, then re-pull Search Console data in 4–8 weeks to measure real before/after movement — the honest version of this case study, once there's a genuine "after" to report.
